DISCOVERY ASTHMA CAMP IS THE IDEAL CAMP EXPERIENCE FOR CHILDREN WITH ASTHMA!

Submitted by bjohnston on 19 May 2004

Imagine your child not being able to keep up with her classmates on the rugby or soccer field because she is gasping for breath, suffering from an asthma attack. This experience is one that can be alleviated if a child's asthma is under control. At Discovery Asthma Camp, the highly trained medical team incorporate teaching a child proper asthma management while experiencing camp activities in a safe and enjoyable environment.

Asthma is the most common chronic disease affecting children and is a reality for 16 - 21% of school children in Saskatchewan, according to a recent study sponsored by the Lung Association of Saskatchewan. Discovery Asthma Camp, with support from The Lung Association, employs a multi-disciplinary approach to teach children with asthma, their parents, and health care professionals asthma management. The goal is for all children with asthma to be able to play and participate in life like their friends. With optimal management this is possible!

This summer 55 children, ranging in age from 7 - 13 years, will gather from all over the province to enjoy a fun-filled camp experience. Hitchcock's Hideaway, nestled on the picturesque banks of Lake Diefenbaker, provides an optimal setting to teach children with asthma how to control this respiratory condition. At camp, children receive 24-hour medical care, which allays the fears of parents. Many parents, who have had a child attend camp in the past, have been pleasantly surprised to learn that their child was able to participate in all camp activities like swimming, hiking, softball, and cookouts.

Registration for Asthma Camp 2004 is well underway and space is limited to 55 campers. Preference is given to children who have not attended camp previously. For registration information or to learn more about Discovery Asthma Camp, please visit our website at www.asthmacamp.org.
